Scripture: John 13:1–17, 1 John 1:8–10
The night before Jesus was crucified, He gathered His disciples in a room for a final time of sacred friendship and teaching before his arrest. During this “last supper” Jesus not only instituted what we call communion or the Lord’s Supper for the first time, but also taught His disciples some of the most crucial lessons they would need as they launched into a hostile post-resurrection world. The first lesson would have been a shocking one, in Jesus’ school of the Upside-Down Kingdom. The way up is down. Leaders wash feet and serve others rather than being served themselves. Paradoxically, serving others leads to joy and a happy life in the Upside-Down Kingdom of Jesus!
