At New Life, we celebrate a rich diversity of spiritual backgrounds, which often sparks questions about baptism. Since it’s been a while since the last sermon on the topic, we’re diving back in to explore what baptism is—and what it isn’t—by looking at Jesus’ life, His commands, and the early church. Baptism is a big deal: it’s a symbol of our identification with Jesus’ death and resurrection, a sign of our commitment to Him, a public proclamation of allegiance, and a step of obedience to His command. While some traditions teach baptism saves or is for infants, we believe Scripture clearly teaches believer’s baptism—a response to faith, done by immersion, following the example and model of Jesus. It doesn’t save us, but it’s a crucial and immediate next step for anyone who places their trust in Christ.
