The Good Samaritan

This week we continue in our new parables series with one of the more familiar parables of Jesus, commonly known as the parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus tells this parable in response to a question from an expert in religious law who was trying to trap him. The lawyer asked: “what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus’ answer would have rocked His Jewish audience because he taught that love for God is inseparable from our love of neighbor. This parable teaches us revolutionary truths like: love overcomes inconvenience, fear and heart-level bigotry. We see that loving God by loving others is often times inconvenient and costly. We also learn that our “neighbor” isn’t just the person we like or the person who is like us. Our neighbor includes anyone who God places in our path who needs compassion. We also see that loving God is always more than just having right theology. Loving God rightly, always leads to a life of loving others sacrificially in a way that points them to the sacrificial love of Jesus. Jesus is the better and truer Good Samaritan who rescued us when we were stripped naked, beat-up and bloodied by sin, and he paid the price for our freedom with his own blood!
