The Sower and The Dirt

Parable(s)

This week we launch into a brand new series on the parables of Jesus. Jesus often taught in parables as a way to compare one thing to another, typically using an earthly story to unearth a deeper spiritual truth. Jesus’ parables were often times marked by an unexpected twist, something that shocks his audience and grabs their attention. The parable of the sower and the soils is one of the most well-known and challenging parables in the New Testament. In this parable, Jesus describes every human heart as one of four types of soil, and the gospel as a seed that lands on those soils. There’s hard soil, rocky soil, thorny soil and good soil. Only one of these bears fruit and proves to be the stuff that genuine faith in Jesus is made of. This parable offers us a lens into our own hearts. Jesus means for this parable to cause us to peer into the window of our hearts and examine whether or not our faith is genuine, and whether or not the gospel has taken root in our hearts and begun to produce fruit in our lives. The good news is that Jesus offers us his love and grace at every stage of our lives. So whatever condition your heart is in right now, Jesus offers to give you a new heart; one that is a fertile landing spot for the gospel that will produce incredible fruit in your life and in the kingdom of God!
