How to Become a Christian
Although Southern Baptist Christianity is a very well-known and widespread religion, there are many people throughout the world that still don’t know what it means to become a true Christian. This is one of the reasons that there have been so many missions created by churches in the Southern Baptist Convention: to spread the word to people who haven’t heard it. So, how does one become a Christian?
Sin is the one thing that creates a separation between man and God. It is our failure to measure up to God’s standards, and it is something that all of man does. Although one may try their best to live perfectly the way God intended us to, nobody is capable of living a flawlessly righteous life. As is said in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” But God loves all of us, and for that reason, he sent his only Son to die for our sins and redeem us from sin. However, for a person to come to God and become a true Christian, what must they do?
The first step to becoming a true Christian is realizing that our sin causes grievances on God’s heart, and coming to terms with the fact that we need a Savior. Admitting this requires us to turn from our sinful ways, and follow Jesus Christ. When we understand just how awful sin is, our thinking becomes one with God’s. After we have admitted that we need a Savior, understand that our sin is evil, and repent, there is just one thing left to do: accept Jesus as our Lord.
“If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10
Once we accept Jesus as our Lord and begin a life avoiding sin and following the word of God, we have become Christians and become closer to God. The Southern Baptist Convention teaches these lessons to our fellow man to allow them the chance to repent and know Jesus on a personal level.
